Before You Leave List

If you have made a list make sure to go through at least twice before departing for your vacation.

  • Bring a first aid check list
  • Reconfirm all your reservations.
  • Get traveler’s checks from the bank.
  • Set automatic light and radio timers.
  • Cancel or hold your newspaper delivery.
  • Leave shades or drapes as you normally do.
  • Pay your bills and take care of your pets.
  • Fill the car with gas before you pack the car.
  • Turn water heater down to the lowest setting.
  • Disconnect the garage door. Unplug it if you can
  • Pay bills that will come due while you are away.
  • Empty the refrigerator of items that might spoil.
  • Lock all doors and windows including basement & garage.
  • Take enough prescription medicine to get you there and back.
  • You might want to turn your refrigerator to its lowest setting.
  • Do not place weapons or disabling chemical sprays in your bags.
  • Make arrangements to purchase some foreign currency if you are traveling abroad.
  • Give house keys to close friends and have them watch your house while you’re gone.
  • Take only the credit cards and personal identification that you will actually need
  • Check the bulbs for the sensor light to see if they will last for your entire trip.
  • If you plan on driving, get your car ready and investigate the local road conditions
  • Remove anything with your name and address from your car before you park at the airport.
  • Plug a cheap radio into a timer so you can have some noise in the house during part of the day.
  • Unplug electronic items, such as, your computer to protect them if you have a storm while you’re gone.
  • Forward your phone to a friend so that someone will seem to be home. Have someone regularly check your messages.
  • Pack the car inside the garage when packing with the door down, so people driving by won’t find out you’re leaving.
  • Check the fluid levels and tire pressure, since your tire pressure will affect the ride and gas mileage you get on your trip.
  • Invest in a good map of the city you are visiting. Note significant points on the map such as your hotel, the Embassy, and a local police station.
  • Make sure someone near your residence knows where to contact you in emergencies or is authorized to make critical decisions regarding your residence.
