How to Cut Back on Luggage

To make sure that you have everything you need instead of lugging around heavy luggage on your vacation. Here are some tips that can help you cut back on what you bring.

  • A good rule of thumb is two bags per person.
  • Pack your belts around the edge of the luggage.
  • Do not place weapons or disabling chemical sprays in your bags.
  • Check the weather, so you can bring the most appropriate items.
  • Call ahead to the hotel to see if they offer any laundry services.
  • Plan your outfits so you can layer instead of bringing lots of coats.
  • Take a solid color sweater that will match any outfit to use to keep you warm.
  • List all the items you are taking and check to see if you really need each item.
  • Coordinate your outfits around a central color so you’ll be able to mix and match.
  • Take small sample sizes of toiletries that will last just long enough instead of huge bottles.
  • See if they include items in your room such as, robes and toiletries that will reduce your packing needs.
  • Two pieces of luggage are easier to carry than one. If one gets lost you’ll still have some of your belongings.
  • Airlines that fly great distances typically have tighter restrictions to save weight on long cross-oceanic flights.
  • Overstuffed bags, or those bulging at the seams, will often not make the cut, and are likely to be checked-in by airline personnel.
  • Don’t waste an inch of your luggage space, pack underwear and socks inside your shoes. This will also help your shoes keep their shape.
  • Take some old clothes with only one last wear in them. You can then toss them out and use the room for the souvenirs you’ll want to bring home.
  • When packing your backpack sometimes everything you want to fit in doesn’t. Solution: Lie out three or four items of clothing on top of one another and roll them together and fasten with rubber bands.
