Avoid being a Victim of a Pit pocket

To avoid one of many fears as a traveler, which is being left with no money because you have just been a victim of a pit pocket or mugger here are some things that you can do to either out smart or prepare yourself for a pit pocket.

  • Know the pickpocket’s tricks
  • Carry your purse under your arm.
  • Carry your money under your clothes.
  • Don’t travel in narrow alleys or poorly lit streets.
  • Carry a dummy wallet and put your money in your front pocket.
  • When possible, avoid having crowds of people surrounding you.
  • Be alert to scams involving an unknown person spilling a drink or food on your clothing
  • Always be alert for distractions that may be staged by pickpocketers, luggage thieves, or purse snatchers.
  • Place a rubber band around your wallet, it will make it much more difficult to remove from your pocket without your knowledge.
  • Keep in mind that purse snatchers and briefcase thieves often work hotel bars and restaurants. Keep your purse or briefcase in view or in hand.
  • Carry at least 10 2 dollar bills. If your wallet is stolen you can call the police and have them alert the banks for anyone changing their bills.
  • Consider wearing a money belt or other secure storage device; waist pouches are not advised because potential thieves will know the location of your valuables.
