Before You Travel, Put Your Affairs in Order

While on vacation you should relax and clear your mind. That is why it is important to have everything in order before you plan to leave anywhere. You don’t want to return home to a pile of bills and past due payments. Here is a list of some affairs that can put your mind at ease while on your travels.

  • Type of paperwork and documentation you will need to travel.
  • Make sure visa(s) are appropriate and current for place and type of travel.
  • Notify your credit card company if making reservations or purchases over seas
  • Ensure that your passport, if needed, is good for at least three or four months.
  • Find out if your personal property insurance covers you for loss or theft abroad
  • Carry your medication in their original bottles to help avoid security questions.
  • If you are traveling outside the United States, check to see what you can take with you.
  • Make sure that you purchase the correct calling card for the correct area you are traveling.
  • Check with your personal insurance carrier to see what coverage you may have on luggage and contents.
  • Ask your credit card company for a number that you can use while over seas if it has been lost or stolen.
  • Have affairs in order: insurance documents, power of attorney, currant will, and guardianship arrangements.
  • Check with your medical insurance carrier about coverage away from your home and work. Know coverage protection for out-of-country travel.
  • If you have any questionable drugs or particularly large supplies, you might want to bring a letter from your doctor stating you have a legal right to use these drugs.
  • Long before you get to the airport take several photos of your backpack, (front and back w/it sitting on the ground next to you for size reference) put these in your carry-on daypack as it’s much easier to SHOW the airport officials a picture of what your missing than spend some very frustrated moments waiting and wondering if your beloved backpack did make the trip with you.
